Eid al-Fitr, 1 Shawwal 1448, falls on Wednesday, 10 March 2027 under the three-minister decree on 2027 holidays, and the following day, Thursday 11 March, is also a national holiday. The government set collective leave on Tuesday 9, Friday 12 and Monday 15 March. Because Nyepi falls on Monday 8 March, the 2027 Eid break lasts ten days, from Saturday 6 to Monday 15 March, with no personal leave. The date agrees with astronomy: the conjunction before Shawwal occurs on Monday, 8 March 2027 at 16.29 WIB, too close to sunset for the crescent to be seen, so Ramadan is completed at thirty days. The final date is still announced by the Minister of Religious Affairs after the isbat session on 29 Ramadan. Eid 2027 comes eleven days earlier than Eid 2026, which fell on 21 March, and Eid 2028 is expected in late February 2028.

The 2026 date was confirmed by the government after the isbat session, as reported by the Cabinet Secretariat. The 2027 date comes from the 2027 joint decree. The 2028 date is an estimate.

From computation to the isbat session

The start of Shawwal depends on the hilal, the first crescent visible after the conjunction. We compute the conjunction with Meeus's formula and check it against NASA's moon phase tables: Monday, 8 March 2027 at 16.29 WIB. At sunset in Jakarta that afternoon the new moon is about an hour and a half old and very close to the horizon. The visibility criteria the government uses are not met, so 29 Ramadan is followed by 30 Ramadan, and 1 Shawwal falls on Wednesday. The isbat session chaired by the Minister of Religious Affairs will announce it on the evening of 8 March, as in previous years.

The Eid break on the March calendar

With Nyepi, two days of Eid and three collective leave days, Eid week 2027 is almost entirely off. The details, with leave opportunities afterwards, are on March 2027 holidays and collective leave 2027. The countdown for every festival is on Eid countdown.

Common questions

What day is Eid al-Fitr 2027 in Indonesia?

A Wednesday. Eid al-Fitr 1448 falls on Wednesday, 10 March 2027, and the second day on Thursday 11 March 2027. Both are national holidays under the 2027 decree. The takbiran evening falls on Tuesday evening 9 March, which is also a collective leave day.

When is the best time to travel home for Eid 2027?

The break starts on Saturday 6 March. If your workplace applies collective leave, leaving that weekend gives four days before Eid. The return rush is usually heaviest on the weekend after the festival, 13 to 15 March; leave on 16 March and after helps avoid it.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2028?

Expected on Saturday, 26 February 2028 by the Umm al-Qura calendar, but the 2028 decree has not been published and the Indonesian date may differ by a day. Eid moves about eleven days earlier each year, so from 2028 it falls in February.
