Nyepi, the Saka New Year 1949, falls on Monday, 8 March 2027 under the 2027 decree. Nyepi 2027 comes only two days before Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March, so it is part of the ten-day Eid break from Saturday 6 to Monday 15 March. In Bali, Nyepi is observed for twenty-four hours from the morning with four prohibitions (catur brata penyepian): no fire or lights, no work, no travel and no entertainment. Streets fall silent and Bali's airport usually handles no flights during Nyepi. The day before, Sunday 7 March, is Pengerupukan, with ogoh-ogoh parades in the evening. In 2026, Nyepi Saka 1948 fell on Thursday 19 March, with collective leave the day before. The Balinese Saka calendar combines moon and sun, so Nyepi always falls in March or early April.

The days around Nyepi
Nyepi is preceded by Melasti, a purification ceremony at the sea or a spring, a few days before, then Tawur Kesanga and Pengerupukan on the last day of the Saka year. After Nyepi comes Ngembak Geni, a day of visits and forgiveness, which in 2027 falls on Tuesday 9 March, the same day as national collective leave.
