Islamic New Year 2027: 1 Muharram 1449

The Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1449, falls on Sunday, 6 June 2027 under the 2027 decree. Because it falls on a Sunday, it adds no day off for workers. The Hijri year 1448 ends on Saturday 5 June, and the eve of 1 Muharram, called malam satu Suro in Javanese tradition, falls on that Saturday evening after sunset. Ashura, 10 Muharram, falls on Tuesday, 15 June 2027; fasting is recommended on Tasua and Ashura, 9 and 10 Muharram. The Hijri calendar counts from the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina, and it was adopted as the start of the era under Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab. The 2026 Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1448, fell on Tuesday 16 June. The 2028 Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1450, is expected in late May 2028.
