The Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (Maulid Nabi), 12 Rabi' al-Awwal 1449, falls on Sunday, 15 August 2027 under the 2027 decree. Because it falls on a Sunday it adds no day off for workers, but the week is still special: two days later, Tuesday 17 August, is Independence Day. In 2026 the Mawlid fell on Tuesday 25 August (1448), eight days after Independence Day. It is marked with religious gatherings, readings of the Prophet's life and salawat in mosques, schools and homes. In Yogyakarta and Surakarta the Mawlid is marked with Sekaten and Grebeg Maulud, palace traditions that bring together religious teaching and Javanese culture. The month of Rabi' al-Awwal 1449 begins, by the decree dates, on Wednesday, 4 August 2027. The 2028 Mawlid is expected in early August 2028, again about eleven days earlier.

Mawlid and Independence Day in one week

In 2027 the Mawlid and Independence Day fall in the same week. One leave day on Monday 16 August gives four days off from Saturday 14 to Tuesday 17 August. The full calendar for that month is on August 2027 holidays, and the 17 August countdown on Independence Day 2027.

Common questions

Does the 2027 Prophet's Birthday add a day off in Indonesia?

Not for five- or six-day workers, because the 2027 Mawlid falls on a Sunday, 15 August. Indonesia does not move holidays that fall on a weekend. The next holiday, Independence Day on Tuesday 17 August, falls on a working day.

When is Grebeg Maulud 2027?

Grebeg Maulud is held by the Yogyakarta and Surakarta palaces on 12 Rabi' al-Awwal by the Javanese calendar, which can differ by a day from the government date. In 2027 that is around 15 August. The palaces announce the official schedule before the celebration.

Why does the Mawlid fall in a different month each year?

Because it is fixed on 12 Rabi' al-Awwal in the Hijri calendar, which is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. Each year the Mawlid comes about eleven days earlier; over thirty-three years it passes through every Gregorian month.
