How this is calculated

Prepared by Radif Partners · Method · decrees reread on 28 October 2026

The start of Ramadan 1448 is expected on Monday, 8 February 2027. The date is not official: the 2027 decree does not list it because it is not a holiday, and the Minister of Religious Affairs sets it after the isbat session on the evening of 29 Sha'ban. The computation runs as follows. The conjunction, or new moon, occurs on Saturday, 6 February 2027 at 22.56 WIB, after sunset. On that evening there is no crescent yet. A day later, on the evening of Sunday, 7 February 2027, the moon is about nineteen hours old, and by our computation its altitude is very likely to meet the criteria the government uses. So 1 Ramadan is expected on Monday 8 February, with the first tarawih prayer on Sunday evening 7 February. If the crescent is not seen, Sha'ban is completed and the fast starts on Tuesday 9 February. With Eid on 10 March under the decree, Ramadan 2027 lasts 30 days if it starts on 8 February.

Why the start date is only certain the day before

The government combines computation (hisab) with sighting (rukyat). A computation team works out the moon's position, then observers at dozens of sites try to see the crescent on the evening of 29 Sha'ban. The results are discussed in the isbat session and announced the same night; an example is the Eid al-Fitr 1446 ruling. The visibility criteria used by Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore require a minimum altitude and elongation. The conjunction times in our table use Meeus's formula, checked against NASA tables; we do not compute the crescent's altitude at each site.

The Umm al-Qura calendar also puts 1 Ramadan 1448 on 8 February 2027. The Eid date comes from the 2027 joint decree. See also Eid 2027 and the Hijri calendar.

Common questions

What is the date of 1 Ramadan 2027 in Indonesia?

The estimate is Monday, 8 February 2027. The official date is announced by the Minister of Religious Affairs after the isbat session on the evening of 29 Sha'ban 1448, around 7 February 2027. If the crescent is not seen that night, the fast starts a day later, on Tuesday 9 February 2027.

How many days is the Ramadan 2027 fast?

If the fast starts on Monday 8 February and Eid falls on Wednesday 10 March as in the decree, Ramadan 1448 lasts 30 days. If it starts on 9 February, it lasts 29 days. A Hijri month always has 29 or 30 days.

Can Muhammadiyah and the government start Ramadan 2027 on different days?

They can. Civil society organisations use their own methods and criteria, and in recent years the start of Ramadan has sometimes differed by a day. In 2027 the conjunction occurs after sunset on 6 February, which makes a difference less likely. This site shows an estimate and waits for the government ruling.
